Hiyu Wine Farm 'Tzum Aos Si' Columbia Valley 2018
This is a half acre parcel planted directly in basalt cobbles with very little soil or sand. The aspect is quite steep and this is one of the most intense and aromatic wines from the site. It has a perfume of sour cherries, rose and pine that is quite astonishing. The plantation is based on planting of grapes in central Italy in the 2nd century AD and is a mixed field with many clones of Sangiovese, Sagrantino, Montepulciano, Cilliegiolo, Aleatico, Trebbiano, Cannaiolo Nero and others. The 2018 version of this wine spent 90 days on the skins whole cluster before being aged in one 500L puncheon and one 300L Hogshead. As the cepage suggests this is a more aromatic version of the flavors we normally encounter in Brunello or Chianti Classico. Like the Hiyu Hypericum this is an experiment with planting exotic, mediterranean grapes in our Northern Climate and just as with that wine, this blends the finesse that comes from our Northern aspect with a wild complexity that simply isn't possible with the varieties normally grown here.
